Books - "How-to"

Anonymous, Miss Abernathy's Concise Slave Training Manual, San Francsisco: Greenery Press, 1996. Greenery Press is at 3739 Balboa Ave., #195, San Francisco, CA 94121, or e-mail. Intelligent handling of a unique S/M relationship. Write for price/ordering info.

Baldwin, Guy, Ties That Bind: The SM/Leather/Fetish Erotic Style, Los Angeles: Daedalus Publishing Company, 1993. Baldwin is a well-known psychotherapist and long-time columnist in Drummer magazine. Commentary on the scene by one of our elder statesmen. Although this book is not, strictly speaking, a "how-to" manual, I think Baldwin's examination of various issues pertinent to our sexual style is an important ingredient in creating a "conceptual toolkit" which can help one to move more comfortably within the community.

Bannon, Race, Learning the Ropes: A Basic Guide to Safe and Fun S/M Lovemaking, Los Angeles: Daedalus Publishing Company, 1992. Smart, approachable guide to the basics, with an especially good section on negotiation.

Califia, Pat (ed.), The Lesbian S/M Safety Manual, Boston: Lace/Alyson Publications, 1988.

Henkin, William A., Ph.D., and Sybil Holiday, CCSSE, Consensual Sadomasochism: How to Talk About It & How to Do It Safely, $16.95, Daedalus Publishing Company, 584 Castro St., San Francisco, CA 94114, 1996. Moser, Charles, Ph.D., M.D., and J. J. Madeson, Bound to Be Free: The SM Experience, The Continuum Publishing Company, 370 Lexington Ave., New York, NY 10017-6503, (212) 953-5858, $24.95 (hard cover), 1996. Dr. Moser and Madeson's book addresses the issue of motivation and the psychology of S/M much more than how to perform physical techniques. Thought-provoking work, important reading for beginners who ask themselves, "Why do I want to do this?"

Queen, Carol, Exhibitionism for the Shy: Show Off, Dress Up and Talk Hot, San Francisco: Down There Press, 1995. Although not strictly about S/M, this book presents ways to begin exploring fantasies, voyeurism, exhibitionism, and alternate personas with your partner. Very sex-positive.
