SAMHAIN

Pronounced "sow-en," with a silent "m," this holiday falls on the last day of October, and is still celebrated today as Halloween. It was customary to slaughter lifestock on this day and begin smoking meat. In the old Celtic calendar, this was the end of one year and the beginning of the new. The veil between the realm of the living and the dead is especially thin on this holiday. In Latin countries, the Day of the Dead is commemorated around this time of year. It is customary to do a divination on this day for what the coming year will bring.
